Colombian Medellin Single Origin Medium Roast Coffee Beans

Our single origin Colombian Medellin roast coffee beans produce an exceptionally smooth coffee with a bright, fresh and full-bodied flavour. Colombian Medellin coffee is a high-quality coffee made from the finest arabica beans in the Medellin region of Colombia.

Why Colombia?

Colombia is the world’s second-largest Arabica bean producer. The country is committed to maintaining a consistently high-quality crop. Due to this, Colombia has developed and maintained a well-respected and deserved high profile amongst discerning coffee roasters worldwide. Consequently, we source the best arabica coffee beans in Medellin to share with you.

The Environment

Several environmental factors contribute to good coffee.

  • Soil: the best coffees are grown in volcanic soil
  • Altitude: Coffee likes high altitudes. The optimum is 1200 to 1800 meters.
  • Rainey: rainfall of 80 inches or so a year is best
  • Temperature: coffee doesn’t do well where there is frost.

Colombia fits the requirements to a tee.

Medellin

One of the best Colombian coffees is Medellin excelso, which is slightly more acidic than Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee.

Harvesting

The Colombian harvest is almost year-round (in most regions). Many coffee producers have gone with mechanical harvesting or strip harvesting, i.e. the plant is “stripped” of the beans. The Colombian way is different; the beans are hand-picked when ready. The bushed is inspected every ten days or so. This regular inspection means that only the best beans are being made into coffee anytime.

Flavour

The Colombian Medellin is a delicious coffee with several subtle notes of milk chocolate, walnut and cocoa; bright, citric acidity; balanced, medium body.

Source

Antioquia/Medellin, Colombia

The ‘City of Eternal Spring, “as it is known, is the second-largest city in Colombia. It is the capital of Antioquia. Antioquia is the largest growing region in Colombia and is the birthplace of the Colombian coffee industry and some of the finest coffee farms in the world. Coffees from Antioquia generally have a medium body and tastes that are not as fruity as those from other regions. However, it produces a well-balanced and smooth cup you can enjoy all day.

What about the beans?

Excelso is a Colombian coffee size grading of the beans, slightly smaller than the Supremo grade but identical in composition and flavour. Both Colombian Excelso and Colombian Supremo may, in fact, come from the same farm and even tree, but are just different in size and so get classified differently. The beans we source are the excelso classification. This is mainly relevant to the roasting process. The different size beans require different methodologies.
